Most brands are concentric, with the center as the exhaust, so the intake air is prewarmed and the surrounding structure is in less need of clearance as the hot pipe doesn't 'see' the structure.
If the brand you have uses an unshielded exhaust pipe, then there is often a 6-inch clearance requirement.
