Can you cut the shingles from the backing wall surface and set the pan into the square hole, so no shingle flammables are behind the pan to catch transmitted heat? If necessary, you could use two pans, rim to rim with the back pan against the flat wall surface and the other pan facing it. That would give even surfaces to silicone neatly.

Your plan seems sound.
