Considering what just happened to fuel costs, IMO it is time to change to a water heat system. Steam systems are by their nature inefficient and as they must reach 212F or better to send heat up, they can not be condensing boilers. You would do better to get a condensing gas boiler so you can get 10% more fuel savings to pay off the installation over time through saved fuel costs and convert to water. Then there would be less a problem in heating the new addition. As you are considering a new system in the addition, the cost of changing would be comparatively less expensive than getting a new system for the new section of the house.
