Hi,
I have a Teledyne Laars Modutherm Boiler (Model# JN-175) unit in my house, it the original from when the house was built in 1982. I'm not the original owner, probably the 4th.

Where I live (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) very few people or technicians have heard of having a residential boiler. Most people have a regular furnace.

To my knowledge very little maintenance has been done. I would like to have the boiler unit cleaned/tuned up. What price should I expect for this.

I've found a technician who seems very knowledgeable and he has quoted me the following. He doesn't work per hour billing rather he quotes to perform a specific service

Cleaning Boiler $645 (approx 6hrs)
-tear down boiler for access
-remove burner pack and clean as required
-break down pilot assembly and clean
-clean boiler tubes
-reassemble and test fire unit-adjust as required
-all equipment to perform above cleaning

In addition to this, he has already taken a water sample and set off to lab to be analyzed. He's quoting me an additional $300 to flush the system and add an inhibitor. I have no details of the analysis just a quick quote over the phone.

Is this a reasonable price?

There many other repairs that need to be done, but this is where I'm going to start for now

Cheers
Russ
