So when you say the expansion tank is on the "supply line" are you referring to the smaller (1/2" ?) line that fills the boiler system, or the supply that is actually the "hot" water pipe that comes from the boiler. Typically, we refer to that as the supply and the pipe returning the water to the boiler the return.

The expansion tank must be connected with the fill valve/pressure reducing valve/backflow preventer/ air seperator BEFORE it tee's into the boiler system.
