I agree, but it isn't always practical to rip an existing structure apart and upgrade. There is always going to be something better. One shouldn't have to stick with oil to get greater than 85% AFUE. The boiler is the most straightforward upgrade and there is fuel savings on the new boilers, just not as much as there could be with hydronics. If the gas boilers were being made as efficient as the oil ones, it would help control some costs at least. SUVs seem pretty popular still...we don't live in an energy conscience environment.

By your argument old radiators are inefficient too. The boiler is in house so the heat is going somewhere. Zoning and variable water temperature seem to be the largest benefits to hydronics.
