A claim of 40% can be made by any slick salesman as long as he doesn't have to GUARANTEE it. Yes, if you replace a 1940's coal boiler with any modern boiler built after 1992, then you could possibly save 40%.

However, it doesn't seem Slick and Slime are going to GUARANTEE theirs will. That is what the AFUE test is ... to show a comparison between boilers. As almost any boiler made this year will be able to have at least an 84% AFUE, there isn't much room for claims for a non-condensing boiler of any make, as boilers generally can't be much over 87% without condensing. A 4% range just doesn't stack up to 40%. Slick and Slime will have to change their sales pitches to match today's situation. As every boiler made will last as long as the buyer as long as it has no leaks and is installed properly, it is pretty much a choice of condensing at up to 87% AFUE or condensing at over 90% AFUE for X dollars one over another. Some new reputable sales pitches would be a good idea before Hibachi and Botch take over the American residential boiler market at $600 for a modulating gas boiler.
