Thanks for the reply!
The "main vent" looks like a rad valve in shape and actions. It is placed just before the feeder pipes off the large main pipe. I think that the thermostat may be at a bad spot (directly at the top of the outside entry hall to the second floor). Any ideas about the sealant (someone told me about something called "dope" or "wicking"???
I think that the fins of the rads may need to have some sort of washers too.

Let's see if anyone else has any suggestions as well.
