Bill,

I have an old Boiler, steam heat.

The main valve you talk about, are you sure that
its not the pessure release valve. It should have
a lever that is spring loaded. This releases pressure and steam when the system is building up to much pressure. This could be dangerous.

Also I found on my old system that you can not turn up the thermostat quickly to a much higher
setting this overworks the system and builds up very high pressure. I found on my system that you can only turn up the thermostat gradually.

The furnace could self destruct. A dangerous situation. I suggest you call a well qualified service technician for you own safety.

Your system should not be building up pressure like this and using the oil you say it is using.

I'm not a service technician or a specialist in this field. I'm just trying to share some experience I have had with an old residential system.

Mike
