Plumbers have had a 'love affair' with cast iron boilers for a century. They tend to like heavy objects. I, too, have had a New Yorker steel boiler for 30 years with no trouble. Any boiler that won't crack can last as long as it isn't abused by leaks in the system.

There are two cast iron condensing boilers - Mestek and Buderus, both pricey; but good.

Otherwise, the most efficient boilers are copper, aluminum and stainless steel. Running a condensing boiler takes some sophisticated design which is more in the vein of HVAC techs.
