Now isn't the time to keep something that is 15% less efficient than you can get. Gas doubled in the past two years and it's not going to get cheaper.

You can leave the pipes in place, cut them free where they rise and use them as a chase to run tubing up to the radiators. Use inlet/outlet on one side of the radiator, but with one extra small return pipe. The radiators won't be less efficient.

The old radiators won't be less efficient, just hold more water than new ones. It would be like the most modern European system with bigger radiators.
