: I have an old steam boiler made of steel. If I could demolish the boiler myself I could save $1,400. What would I need to take it apart? Can it be broken with a sledge hammer or cut up with a metal cutting saw, or would it need to be cut apart with a welding torch?

: Thanks

If its steel you will have a hard time busting it up with a sledge hammer. You dont give a lot of info on the boiler itself so 1,400 seems reasonable cost for a contractor. Asbestos may be an issue and depending in which state you live in the guidelines vary. Here in Idaho homeowners are permitted to abate asbestos and depoist it at a local landfill without having a permit or notification. Your state may be different and might require you as the homeowner to notify and permit the job, if that is the case then you would be better off hiring a contractor if the boiler has asbestos in it.
