Where would you typically need expansion areas in the circuit, and what would you use?

+++ Solder to thread elbows at expansion swing joint points; not directly into the run, but a zig and zag so the threads can take the movement instead of the solder stress.

Do we really need glycol? We live in southern New England.

+++ Only when the heater doesn't work in the coldest weather below freezing. It is also a good reason to inspect and make sure you don't have leaks.
