The boiler could last more that 20 years with proper maintenance. When ever it does not light on a call for heat fuel, spark, nozzle or air could be the cause. Also if it is plugged with soot or scale that will snuff out the flame. If the bioler becomes a rust bucket its life span will be shorter. The problem sounds intermitten. Is this and oils or gas system? If its oil the fuel line gets dirty and the filter and nozzle must be changed. When the service is done an efficeincy test must be completed.
