one contractor uses "schedule 40 steel near – boiler piping with cast iron fittings from new boiler to existing system main piping and condensate return piping as per local codes and manufacturers’ instructions and piping schematics."
+++ Call the contractor that made this statement as it is proper procedure and can be verified later. The other contractor is saying he'll do it any way he likes without saying that he'll do it right.

:
: Also, the 1st contractor recommends the Burnham Independence model IN7 gas-fired steam boiler and Burnham V8 Series oil fired steam boiler. The second recommends the Weil McLain PEG 45 and the Weil McLain PSGO-4.

: Which is the better boilers? And are both contractors recommending similarly sized units?

They are equivalent in quality. As to whether they are approximately the same size, it doesn't make a difference unless they are the right size boilers to fill the system and the radiators completely with steam. So ultimately the installer has to make sure they are big enough to do the job.
