Use the boiler outlet valve. When you can get sure numbers out of thermometers, move the valve closed five degrees at a time while the noise is happening until the TD rises to 30F from boiler inlet to outlet. If there is a point where the sound changes or stops, note that TD. Stop at 30f TD, going over 30 TD isn't a good thing.
