One-pipe systems use a minimum pitch of 1-inch in ten feet.

A main vent is on the main in the basement near the end of the last radiator about one foot or more from the drop to the condensate line.

Brass vacuum breakers are available at the local plumbing supplier. The vent is supposed to do that job; the use of one is just to see if the vent is able to do its job against the water trap or not.
