I had a new weil mclain put in this summer. I never had banging before and now I do. The banging seems to be coming from one of the returns. The boiler has been skimmed the radiator vents have been all replaced. Originally the two dry returns had vent rite #33 on each elbow just before the return went back down to the boiler. I have been reading heating help.com and have Dan Holohan's book on order. I have set the pressuretrol down to 0.5 and cut out at 1. I was also having a problem with short cycling from the thermostat. The thermostat would cut out before the upstairs was heated. I switched the Honeywell Chromotherm form adaptive intlligent recovery to convection. Now the boiler cycles on to heat the whole house on average 20 minutes. It seems that the longer running time is contributing to this problem with hammering. I have also replaced the vent rite 33's with a Gorton #2 on each return. Could these Gorton's be doing more harm than good? Could this tapping be left over water from before the boiler was skimmed? It's a one pipe system with gravity returns. thanks ed
