Yes, the return is one continouos part of the main as there is no trap to separate the main and return on a one-pipe system. so the main/returns would be vented some feet just after the last radiator. The steam would be best to flow toward the return pushing air out the main vent, so you wouldn't vent the beginning of the main, just the main after the last radiators. A main vent at the beginning of the main would immediately shut as the steam hit it, so be useless.

You won't smell 'stronger' steam, but you might sense the improved heat in the air.
