I too have a problem with my boiler when it makes hot water only (not when it makes steam) - it bangs loudly.
My friend guessed that it is related to the hot water pump that the boiler is connected to. He says that the pump creates a vacuum within the boiler, as the hot water is being heated. He stated that the drop in pressure inside the boiler causes the water to flash into steam, although the water temperature is below its boiling point (at normal pressure).
I think my friend is right, but I don't know how to fix this problem.
I am not technical either, but maybe this might help you, if your problem is similar.
