You'd said that your plumber suggested installing a zone valve for the family room with a "second thermostat" to control it. My assumption was that this was to be an additional zone valve. Perhaps I assumed too much.
You are correct. The only way that second thermostat can help to correct the problem is if is controlling a second zone valve. If the single zone valve is merely shifted to the family room zone, you will likely still have problems, except that now the other rooms will be too warm.
Is it feasible at this point to replace the 1/2" piping with 3/4"?
