in reply to all the questions you asked...no the top of the boiler is not sooted...we can not see up the chimmney...yes we have a pump, the coupling is fine and is turning once boiler is warmed up...2 pipes out of the rad's but no expansion tank in any closet or room upstairs with a overflow pipe running out of the house...have not checked temp. gauge, not sure where it is at. Photo's would surely help...sorry for my ignorance...Micki
