Basically, the problem was a lack of heat. The boiler didn't fire up when the thermostat was turned up. I believe this is because the water leaked out of the boiler, and the low-water shutoff kicked in to turn off the burners.
The boiler was installed in 1976, so it's 25 years old. We just bought the house, and it looks like the boiler wasn't kept in terribly great shape. I can see some drips on one part of the boiler in an area which also has some rust. I'll try filling it up again and see if I can see more leaking.
