This sounds more like pipe movement banging than water hammer. When pipe cools down, it shrinks slightly and when it gains enough force to pull it along a beam or hangar to overcome friction, the pipe bangs. Look for places where the pipe passes through floors or walls and look at the hangars at the time the system cools.
