BTU input -vs- BTU output

What is the difference between BTU imput and BTU output?I have a boilerplate indicating both (50,000imput, 70,000output).Even though a professional will be replacing my hot water boiler, I would like to know for personal reasons. Your time and forthcoming response is apreciated.
