I think you're on the right track. The heat exchanger has never been cleaned, only the ignitor (2 yrs ago) and condensate drain (every year). So I had an annual service done, and the guy noted that the ignitor was quite dirty although the exchanger looked great. So the theory is that it was igniting on the first try, and maybe some gas was building up somehow between attempts. It tries 4-5 times before it does a full purge. Anyway, the problem seems to be solved. I'll repost if not.
