+++ For a REAL concern for safety, find a tech that actually OWNS a combustion test kit and knows how to use it. Have him use it every year.

Wood boilers have no way to shut off the fire when there is a problem, without spraying water inside on it (that can stress the boiler) or pulling the embers. Modern automatic boilers are the safest machines as evidenced by their use - nobody sues companies for making and selling them to the public. Just make sure your safeties on the boiler are well-kept, so don't neglect them.
