what would have changed to cause this problem?
There might be a leak in the system,

so make-up water is coming in to replace it, bringing with it oxygen to corrode metal and hardness as calcium and magnesium to coat the inside. Pockets in the coating make hot places to sizzle and pop.

Boiling out the hardness also damages metal and seals, so might not be a good answer.

is the heat management worth the investment?
Yes. The HeatManager would let the boiler temperature remain lower until the coldest weather instead of it being driven up to the high limit all the time from overlapping zone demand.
