Oil companies see this happen occasionally so will tell you the straight scoop about how long, as they want to keep customers.

There are devices that will monitor the smoke output and other devices to monitor the flame quality; but they aren't cheap. So few people install them that most oil companies don't know where to get them. The idea of oil, other than having a convenient fuel you own after you buy it instead of a utility bill, was that it was less expensive than gas or electric, so people didn't install expensive devices.

The best way to prevent this is to have annual service done with combustion testing instruments.
