OK to run returns under basement floor?

I have a gas-fired Burnham steam boiler that was installed in '99 -- works great. A few lengths of pipe along the returns in the basement are pitched the wrong way, so I'm getting loud knocking. These need replacement. Also, I'm looking to turn the basement into a finished playroom and am considering about changing the system to a "wet system" from a "dry system" by running the new returns underground.
I'd be getting a lot more headroom while taking care of the knocking problem. I don't mind cutting into the floor.

Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for the advice.
