Electric boilers with existing radiator system?

Our house currently has a very old boiler that started life burning coal, was retrofitted for oil, and at some point was retrofitted again for natural gas. We have been told it will be extremely inefficient and are getting quotes for a replacement. Do the new electric boilers come close to gas boilers as far as efficiency and cost to operate? For the future will electric be a good choice even if it is more expensive than gas now? According to the Duke Power website for North Carolina residential rates vary from .10 per KwH to .05 per KwH depending on usage. Many thanks for the advice.
