An automatic water feeder on a residential steam system is infrequently called a sprinkler system. When the solenoid that feeds water has a chip of dirt in the seat, the system fills up to the vents and sprays water around the house - not the best situation.

Also, if the boiler was filling automatically, you wouldn't have found out that you have a problem - like a leak - and the boiler would rust out fast from the oxygen in the feed water.
