replacing an old steam boiler

I have an old house and in the basement is an old H. B. Smith steam boiler (No. 110L-1100L). It was originally oil fired but some time ago, in the 70's(?), it was retrofitted with a natural gas burner.

I suspect this boiler was not very efficient when it was built and I imagine it is even less efficient now. I have written the Smith Boiler folks to find out how efficient it was/is... Hopefully they can tell me.

How efficient are modern residential steam boilers (this one is probably in the smaller end of the size range) and how much does it cost, roughly, to remove an old boiler and replace it with a new one?

What manufacturers of new residential steam boilers would you recommend?

TIA,

--Doug
