I also have single pane, no lift cord, ripply
glass windows. I like the old look through the
rippley glass and have added new tripple
pane storm windows ($35 HD) for better winter
glass seal. A replacement window would be in
the order of $150 up. It is up to you which
look you are going for.

If you have a single pipe steam system, one
pipe going to each radiator, the system will
be more expensive to convert to a hot water
system. That is because you need to have a
flow of water through each radiator.

Important thinigs you have to do with a steam
boiler.
1) keep level of water in sight glass
to about 2/3. Check once every week.
2) Flush the boiler through the waist valve
every 2 weeks or so. Caution water sludge will
be HOT.

Why not go a year to see wht your fuel costs
are so have a benchmark.
