: : I am in the process of replacing an ancient (30+ years)gas-fired boiler. I have only gone to my regular plumber to get a price quote at this point in time. Let me say that we have been happy with the service we have received from our plumber over the years.

: if happy with him before.... why the sudden change of heart? the fact that your asking... means he didnt prove the value.... have you asked him to explain what the price includes? ... your paying for more than just the boiler... your paying for his work and sweat... parts.... warrenty.. insurance... future service... man has to feed his family too... value is more than how cheap something is... the old saying... can have cheap fast or good... pick any two....

I totally understand this and that's why I haven't gone out and gotten any additional quotes at this point in time. BUT....he has explained what the price includes but will not break the cost down between labor and materials for example. I know from talking to him what his expectation is for how many hours this job will take. When I look at the retail cost of the boiler (I'm assuming that the retail cost will already have a mark-up given that he probably gets a discount from the plumbing supply house he deals with) and the incidental parts and subtract that from the total - his hourly rate appears to be more than double what he generally charges.

This is the reason for the questions.
