What you're doing is OK Joe. The thing on top of the air scoop is usually an automatic air vent that you can help lose some air from the system sometimes. Keep the screw top closed down until you remember to open it for a while (You can leave it open for a day, if you can remember to get back to it to close it. Leaving it open lets water evaporate and the air vent leaks after a while if you leave it open.) The tank below it keeps the air inside a rubber-like air bladder, so the important air won't get out of the bladder until it ever fails (usually never).
