You idea will work without reducing the output noticeably. An alternative is to get 1/2-inch metal flat bar, drill a hole for a lag bolt to pass through at one end, bend the bar 90 degrees into an el so the hole lays flat on the wall, bend the other end so it hooks into the center space of the radiator high on the radiator, and lag bolt the hook into the stud behind. It can prevent rocking to get the radiator to fall over.
