Old stack relays would trip and stop the burner if there wasn't a flame to heat the sensor within a given time period.

It is an ancient idea to prove flame and is quite mad for today. A fire under the chimney would also keep the sensor warm enough, or a flame around the boiler from spilled oil and papers could warm it enough to keep the flame on. It is a better idea to rely upon a cad cell relay, as the cad cell relay has been the flame protector over the past half century.
