Fiberglass insulation of the type you describe could be used and then wrapped and banded with aluminum flashing.

Vents to eliminate air from the mains where needed is a benefit. Don't put them right at the end where they can be slammed, though. Put the vents a foot and 1/2 from the ends and up on 8-inch-long pipes if you can, to keep water from slamming them.
