The configuration makes no sense unless the boiler is still oil and propane is less expensive, which it rarely is.

Strange things like this happen when owners think that the boiler uses the same fuel to just keep the boiler hot as it does to heat the whole house. The condition of keeping a boiler hot is the same as keeping a 40 gallon propane water heater hot or an electric water heater hot, they all weigh about the same and use the same energy to keep them hot all day.

There are such boilers called 'cold start' boilers; they would be the same as yours without the tankless coil. The same boiler you have is offered without the tankless coil, so would not be kept warm over the summer.
