Did you make sure the main vent is good and up off the main on a nipple about 8 inches higher than the main so water doesn't splash in it? It is big enough or do you nedd to put two on a manifold off that main riser? Is it in the right place about a foot or so from the end of the main?

It seems that the upstairs radiators are acting as the main vents. The downstairs vents don't have enough time to get heat up before the thermostat trips it off.

Do this a step at a time. Because the larger vents are supposed to be on the farthest runs doesn't mean they automatically will be right for the radiator sizes. Make sure the main vent(s) are working. Swap one of the larger vents from upstairs with a smaller vent downstairs to observe the effect. There are several sizes of each vent to 'tailor' the vent timing of each radiator.
