First, water freezes at 32°, so why worry @ 50°.
Second when it gets that cold, I'd hope the heat would be on keeping the pipes warm anyway. If yho had the boiler off for long periods and the circ on might not be so great circulating cold water through the rest of the system, sucking the heat out of the boiler and the rest of the system out to the cold. Glycol for a boiler should the the non-toxic variety, but use as a last resort if you're prone to power outages. Insulate the pipes well with armaflex and maybe put a heat tape on the pipe rather then running the circulator.
