If you succeed in opening the ciruit by pulling the molex apart, and get further, you are possibly in for surprises. You can probaably get the pump off, but getting a replacement may be trickier than expected. If you do get a replacement, the probability that the coil has been limed and obstructed would predict the same banging.

These devices were designed to be pulled apart yearly, cleaned, refurbished as needed and reassembled. The service book needs the signature of the CORGI repairperson to keep the warrantee.

Petition your representative to force the manufacturers to make heaters that are ideal for homeowners that do not need to be touched for a lifetime. Better yet, make all emergency repair at the manufactuer's expense. Ah, such wishfulness.
