shutting off water for a tankless HW system

We have a home with a tankless hot water heater running off the furnace. I had been advised by a friend to turn off the water main to the house if I leave for a few weeks in the winter, to decrease water damage in case of frozen pipes if there is a furnace or power failure. The house is insulated, and the heat is left at 55 for the winter. With the tankless system, will shutting the main cause problems for the system? If a HW pipe bursts, will the system see that as a demand for hot water, and turn on? If the hot water system is empty of water when the furnace turns on (for heat), will that cause damage?
