Maintenance on Steam System: Chemical Flushing?

I own a 1930's house with a steam system, the boiler for which is something like 25 years old, industrial strength, and of high quality we've been told. For the first time in our 20 years in the house, we had uneven heating this week(radiators on one side of the house were hot, other side cold). Fellow came to fix it, doing so by draining some water, saying it was too full. Put new guage in for us. He then told my wife we should have him come back 2-3 times to flush out with chemicals of one type or another and then come back yearly to do it again, or check on it. I was originally told tht all I need to do (sort of like replacing oil in a car) was to religiously drain the rusty water out once a week in winter, once a month in summer, which I have done. Are these chemical (or acid? treatments at all beneficial, and, if so, why? Seems to me we're doing fine....Andy
