Houses are no longer under the conditions before dependable electricity, so the need for a system that collects all its water in the basement to prevent freeze-ups is not necessary.

The benefits of efficiency and zoning outweigh IMO the need for a historic system. The labor costs of steam piping replacement and the extensive patching after making sure that vertical runs don't have holes due to age is too expensive for no benefits. Pex-al-pex is a convenient way to get tubing up through walls from and to copper horizontal manifolds and runouts.
