As repeated many times before, there is a difference in the meaning of efficiency and effectiveness.

A thermostat will NEVER make a boiler more efficient.

In this situation your new thermostat has made the heating system less effective.

The problem is a creation of your nightmare. Rewiring is in order; but nobody can tell you where the new device is wired now, so improvements are up to a visit by someone who REALLY knows what to do when he sees the wiring and gives recommendations for correction.
