Even if your old system did go into a partial vacuum as part of its cycle; you would then require a combination pressure/vacuum gauge. As systems are no longer kept as vacuum systems, the gauge would be a pressure gauge as required by ASME to indicate to the relief valve pressure. It seems the gauge was an error.
