The occasion could be related; especially if the units are attached to a common chimney and especially since the fuel comes from the same source. These are not areas where homeowners stumble onto a solution; the solution may throw an experienced, qualified technician until stack flow and fuel flow conditions are understood using instruments. You definitely do not want this condition to continue on into the winter; the fuel smell is a clue of maladjustment.
