Blowdown and valves

I recently purchased a home with a HydroTherm steam boiler with a McDonald & Miller Uni-Match Auto Water Feeder. From discussions with others, I understand that it's important to blow down the boiler's low-water cutoff from time to time and that the basic procedure is to open the blowdown valve and to drain about 1/2 gallon water. My questions are: (1) Do I have to open the valves (gauge cocks?) at the end of the sight glass while blowing down? Do I ever need to open/close these valves? (2) Do I need to do something to replenish the water drained via blowdown (the auto-feeder has a "manual feed" button that looked promising)? (3) Is it better to blow down while the boiler is on or off?

Thanks in advance,
Sruli
